Set to open in 2026, Heraion-Teikhos (which translates to “Hera’s city”) aims to bolster the region’s tourism sector. It is located in the Karaevli district of Tekirdag and has been used by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in its 25-year-old “Heritage for the Future” initiative to excavate ancient Thracian cities. Turkey and foreign tourists alike are expected to visit the region due to its new amenities, including walking paths, visitor routes, and a digital information center. Visitors will also be able to immerse themselves in the history and culture of the Thracians. Heraion-Teikhos is one of the few ancient cities associated with Thracian material culture that will be integrated into Turkey’s in-situ tourism offerings. Being located near Istanbul, a major center of global tourism, adds to the city’s appeal for those interested in ancient Thracian civilization, whose culture is preserved in the remnants scattered across the site. The site is expected to attract numerous tour operators as well as people travelling individually from Istanbul, which has been confirmed by the excavation team.
